Delayed for a year to cash in on the „Renner“ effect, this movie is finally here (in the UK anyway, later than a lot of countries but that’s often the case)

It’s hard to know what one can expect of a film like this. Another in the ever growing „modern spin on the fairy tale“ cycle, this film evades the usual updated psycho-sexual variations of the story that have existed for a long time to go for a simple „what if?“ future where the siblings become a sort of Van Helsing style professional witch killers, bringing them in on a case that becomes a „countdown to doom“ scenario as the witches prepare for a once in a generation ceremony that will make them immune to fire (rather like Vampires seeking immunity from sunlight situation) During this case they will also (A) Discover things about themselves and their own past (B) Discover that not all witches are evil, some fight for good (C) Have to confront their own prejudices in light of B (D) Face old nemesis supreme head witch Muriel, connected to their past tragedy (E) Befriend a misunderstood Ogre (F) Patiently tolerate an obsessed fan boy (G) Save some kids marked for death at Muriel’s ceremony. Much violence and gore will follow. Anachronistic weapons will be fired, colourful witches will be slaughtered in mass, and warm, lovable, gay spirited people with „dead meat“ written on their foreheads will naturally die to raise our revenge driven bloodlust as our heroes deal violent justice to the unholy.

Refreshingly, the film doesn’t pussy out for a neutered PG13 family friendly rating (a terrible cinema sin that film companies are increasingly going against) but instead heads for „Evil Dead“ territory, with over the top gore, absurdly violent deaths, nudity and swearing, all in 3D, which is quite well used here, with depth between objects and speed/space during fast action scenes thoroughly planned and set up.

Despite the high budget, this is unashamedly a B-movie in Corman and Troma traditions, and never aims to be more than dumb fun, despite various stabs at genuine emotion and pathos throughout. The film’s famed production history attests to its schizophrenic nature. Born as an out and out Gothic comedy from the Ferell-Mackay stable, it apparently pulled up when the similar „Your Highness“ tanked (understandable given that it was a decently made movie torpedoed by a scattershot improv style that didn’t suit it) and was retooled as an „Evil Dead“ style comedy horror under the direction of Norwegian pulper Tommy Wirkola. As a result, the films tone and approach veer violently from out and out absurdist comedy to serious supernatural horror drama. One moment it’s Mel Brooks, the next it’s „Blade“ or „Van Helsing“, and the seams are quite visible. Kudos to Wirkola and team for playing such an absurd idea straight, giving us an entertaining Saturday night movie rather than a DOA would be comedy, and since its only raison d’etre is some bloody popcorn fun then it succeeds.

My friend invited me to watch this movie which saddened and delighted me. Awhile back I saw the Philomena movie previews in a movie theater but I forgot about it since it was not well advertised on American television. This movie was well acted with conviction and genuineness. I enjoyed the cinematography of the United Kingdom also. Any real mother on the planet earth will understand Philomena strong loving yearning and connection to her long lost son named Anthony Lee aka Michael Hess. Philomena Lee came from a different generation where one respected and allowed the strong authority of family and church to dictate one’s personal life. That is why Philomena guarded the secret about her first born son for years from her children and grandchildren. Philomena’s brothers and sisters knew about the first born son and one of her brothers actually met Anthony (aka Michael Hess) when he was a toddler at Sean Ross Abbey. Philomena was naive and not knowledgeable about about potential reliable sources like the internet to track her son down yet she did not know his adopted name. That would be interesting if the biological father of Anthony Lee (Michael Hess) or his paternal family make themselves known publicly after seeing the movie and book etc.

(Spoilers) After watching the movie, I had some questions that were raised in my mind about Philomena Lee’s long lost son named Michael Hess aka Anthony Lee – At the age of three to three and half years old, Michael Hess was adopted by an affluent Catholic couple named the Hesses from Ferguson, MO who already had three older sons of their own! Michael and his sister Mary (also from Sean Ross Abbey) appeared in American newspaper articles after they arrived to America from Ireland to live with the Hess family. In America, Michael flourished academically and excelled in sports. Despite having an alleged loving ,affluent, and adopted Catholic American family, Michael felt lonely and had a strong emotional yearning for his birth mother and his birthplace which was alienated from him since he was three to three and a half years old! From reading different accounts about his personal life, I discerned that Michael was unhappy and felt unloved by his adopted father named Doc Hess and his three adopted brothers. I read that he was loved by adopted mother named Marge Hess and his adopted sister Mary (who also came from Sean Ross Abbey). There are other accounts where I read that he had a happy family life with the Hesses. Being materially privileged and well educated are not guaranteed strong factors for happiness. I have read that in his adult life, Michael had stormy personal relationships and engaged in risky behavior that threatened his physical and political career. Despite his physical attractiveness, intelligence, talent, wealth, and brilliant career, Michael was unhappy and looked relentlessly for his birth mother Philomena who allegedly gave him up when he was a toddler. What drove him to relentlessly look for a mother who abandoned him and leave a very powerful clue for her (depicted in the movie) to find him unless he had conflicting childhood memories of Philomena than how the nuns at Sean Ross Abbey depicted her?! Michael must had some reliable inkling that Philomena was alive despite her advanced age. With his savvy political connections and wealth , I wonder why Michael had to rely solely on the untruthful nuns at Sean Ross Abbey to find out where his natural mother was. Michael knew the name of his birth mother and his birthplace!! If I was in his shoes, I would have hired a private investigator. I hope there is a movie sequel to answer my questions and Michael Hess aka Anthony’s Lee childhood and adulthood in America.

In my opinion this movie was completely awesome! From the dancing to the acting to the music! it was great! From the reviews I’ve read most people are hating on it which is stupid!! All the roles were great and the choreography’s were awesome. I don’t understand what was so bad about this movie, sure, it wasn’t like Step Up but that doesn’t make it a horrible movie. Chris Brown wasn’t horrible either. STOP HATING ON EVERY LITTLE THING because it wasn’t a „disappointment“ like some of you guys are saying. (maybe someone else is a „disappointment“) IT WASN’T A WASTE OF MY TIME neither was it of my money. So guys watch the movie for yourself and don’t go by what other people think because it’s not true! GREAT MOVIE B- Boying all the way!

How far does idealism go? Does it require personal sacrifice? Does it conquer any and all familial loyalties? Can personal relationships take precedence, or does everything ultimately play second fiddle to your own moral convictions? These questions and many more ruminate deep within the many assorted characters of Robert Redford’s reflective new feature, The Company You Keep. Based on the novel by Neil Gordon, adapted to the screen by Lem Dobbs, the title proves to be the focal point for these characters as one’s decision in the opening scene sets into motion an outpour of ramifications for the former members of the Weather Underground activists. Set in the present day, the surviving members of this group have spent the past few decades in hiding, eventually having moved on with their lives and finally gotten to a place where they were able to create families and settle down into a place of normalcy.

As the film opens, one of these members, Sharon Solarz (played with heartbreaking conviction by the great Susan Sarandon), has made the decision to turn herself in after decades of hiding. The story of her and her co-conspirators is taken up by young ace reporter Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf), and when he interviews her one of the first questions he asks is why she chose now to come forward and serve the sentence that she has long eluded. Her reasoning? It’s no surprise that the guilt became too much to handle, but she explains that her rationale for waiting so long was that she needed the time for her children to be old enough to remember her but not so old that they wouldn’t be able to live their normal lives without her. Played with superb chemistry by the simultaneously arrogant and naive LaBeouf against the tragic, hauntingly remorseful Sarandon, this important scene is one of many that delicately hits on that core theme of where your personal cause ends and your responsibility for those outside of yourself begins.

The Company You Keep ponders on how far idealism can go before it gives way to an almost immature narcissism, if it does at all. Is it selfish to sacrifice your family for your personal cause, or is the true selfishness in putting your family above anything and anyone else? These characters are forced to ask this question of themselves and their personal answers drive the momentum of Redford’s film and clash them against one another. After discovering the decision that Solarz has made, widowed father Jim Grant (Redford) gets into contact with former comrades long left silent in order to seek out past flame Mimi Lurie (Julie Christie). Lurie is the answer to his need to protect his only daughter, and the plot here is driven by his search to find her, a search that sees him dig up old contacts and force everyone to reflect on the choices they’ve made.

While Grant, whose real name is revealed to be Nick Sloan, is hunted for his crimes by the FBI, led by Terrence Howard’s dogged agent, Redford stages the majority of his film as a series of conversations between these former activists just trying to move on in their new lives. Digging up the history of these characters opens up a lot of old wounds that will never heal, and one of the primary strengths of The Company You Keep is in the way it posits that one can never truly outrun their past. Whether or not they’ve moved on and settled into new lives, these characters will never escape the sins of their youth and they will always be forced to live with the consequences of their actions. These people see the pain they’ve caused and that catalyst in the opening scene drives a story that causes them all to take a moment to look inside themselves and come face-to-face with the choices they’ve made.

Along with LaBeouf and Sarandon, the cast member who stands out in particular is Julie Christie, unsurprisingly making the most of her rare screen turn. When the characters played by her and Redford finally come together, all of those powerful themes come to a clash in a personal debate that sees both of them pushing against one another in service of their beliefs. While most of the characters in The Company You Keep are filled with remorse over their past, Christie’s Mimi has gone the opposite path and never given up her old ways. She still fights for the cause and Christie plays her resilience with a captivating determination that refuses to back down to Sloan’s emotional ploys. In this scene he looks at her and tells her that he can see her true self no matter how much she tries to hide it, that he sees it in her eyes and Christie’s natural gifts allow her to make that moment absolutely believable with the way we (and Sloan) can see her soul right through them.
